The monument was built in 330 BC to celebrate the accomplishment of a theatrical performance. It is a Choragic monument, named after Choregos, which means “sponsor.” The top would have had a bronze tripod on it, which would have been given to the victor. It is interesting architecturally because it is one of the few curved, cylindrical pieces of architecture. This was the first time we saw an engaged column, which is a fusion of a column and the wall.
