The Temple of Apollo was at the top of the hill on an area where special vapors came out of the rocks. Like other temples, this is not the original temple in this location. There were supposedly five here before (but only two of these are historically verified). The 1st was made of laurel trees, the 2nd was out of wax and honey/bee hives, and the 3rd was out of Bronze. The 4th is the first historically verified one, built in 550 BC and destroyed in 480 BC by an earthquake. The 5th was a six by fifteen column Doric temple built in 450 BC.
The current temple had sculptures by Autenor. Apollo would have been on the east pediment, while on the west side, the iconography was of Dionysus. This combination shows the battle between light (Apollo) and dark (Dionysus). The west side of the temple (with Dionysus) faced the theater, which was the only place in the sanctuary for competition. It was designed for singing and sat about 5000 people.
