This temple to Artemis fulfilled the needs of her cult. The sanctuary was dedicated to the cult of women at large, but children would come here to learn. This is the place where Agamemnon almost sacrificed his daughter but Artemis saved her. Full sacrifices here were always animals, however in memory of human sacrifice, they would cut a tiny bit at childrens’ throats in order that a drop of their blood would fall on the alter.
The temple was an H-shaped stoa (the Brauron Stoa) made from limestone. It was a Doric temple, but still has a light feeling.
Appropriately, we had the Greek women presentation here. We heard about their home life, education, clothing, role in society, marriage, and political rights, all of which were very limited.
